PHILIPPINES Intro We visited the garbage mountain at TONDO in Manila Philippine, an area with approx. 1.1 millions peoples and this garbage area cover nearly 25 hectares with few hundred thousands peoples living under poverty line. They spent most of the time collecting plastic, metal, or paper to make a living in a home without a bathroom or a kitchen. SUNSHINE ACTION donated some food and other resources to several charity organizations. We visited the house with over 70 mentally disorder children in TONDO and then nearly 30 handicapped children in QUEZON CITY. Virlainie Foundation 20 years ago, Mr. Dominique LEMAY from France created Virlanie Foundation to take care of the street children in Manila. Now, they have over 10 houses for these children and young adults. Each house is managed by a Father & Mother as real couple giving the love and warm of family. Virlanie Foundation is the biggest NGO in Philippines for the Street Children and Dominique has helped over 10'000 children reunited with family, being adopted or simply changed their destiny from the street.

BUILDING PROJECT Sunshine Folding Container Houses Our Sunshine Folding Container Houses consist of brand-new mobile containers. They are a green and economical solution to the housing crisis. Each container is made from new steel sheets and includes water-proof and fire-proof insulation. They have a minimum lifespan of 13-15 years or more, depending on local weather conditions and maintenance. These homes are designed to provide a quick housing solution in natural disaster zones, or to provide extra accommodation to orphanages or care homes. The price of each home is lower than the cost of purchasing and renovating a second-hand container. They also avoid the possible risk to health that may come with a second-hand container that has been used to store dangerous chemicals. These houses are modular, meaning a row of one or even two storeys would fit together well. Stairs can be installed at one end of the row to provide access to the second storey.

THAILAND I was on the road for 5 hours visiting the Camillian Social Center Rayong with Fr. John Le SVD. There are some 80 HIV+ orphans and some female severely sick patients, mostly without or abandoned by their families. The children are taking cocktail treatment and the shelter will take care of them until the age of 18, when they can find a job and learn to survive hopefully. ☀️ Sunshine Action donated several items during this visit, including rice, cooking oil, diapers for adults, etc.. 🙏🏻✨ The Fr. John Le SVD took me to visit several communities of asylum seekers and refugees from the Vietnamese mountain tribes. The government took their lands in Vietnam and they fought for it and now prosecuted by the police, they have to escape to Thailand seeking asylum with the UN. The process could take many years to be recognized with the "refugee status" and the Thai government is not assisting. They are illegal workers struggling to survive doing part-time construction and maybe farming. I visited several communities, some of them have between 10-30 families living in small rooms. The rent for each small room is between 1'500-2'500 baht (approx. HK$320-500/month), plus some extra 500 baht for water & and electricity. I met a 73-year-old asylum seeker, who just got off from ICD detention center where he was locked up for 7 years. He is completely alone and handicapped. Sunshine Action donated a variety of food from eggs, meats, cooking oil, fish sauces, etc… This group of people worry about their daily food, without any stable income, and can't see the future. They simply don't know what will happen next that could affect their mental health easily. Deeply thanks to Fr. Anthony le Duc SVD in arranging the visit to the newly open M.C. House in Bangkok. In 2007, I started the first visit to the House for the dying... The Missionaries of Charity 仁愛傳教修女會 is a Catholic religious congregation established in 1950 by Mother Teresa 德蘭修女, now known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. As of 2020, it consisted of 5,167 religious sisters. A member of the congregation must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "Wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missionaries_of_Charity We made the first donation in Thailand since the pandemic. Sunshine Action visited and donated food & others resources to many M.C. Houses around the World, including houses in Kenya, Chile, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, etc… July 2014 Nine SUNSHINE ACTION volunteers went to Mae Sot, Thailand donating over 75 tones of rice, dry food, bricks, cements, construction materials, basic need materials, stationery and sponsoring 3 life-saving surgeries for the heart disease patients, including the following organizations: Mao Tao Clinic BCMF Burmese Children Medical Fund Eyes to Burma KKB Kwe Kha Baung Migrant School Refugee working and accommodation conditions Since their nationality is not recognized by the Thai government, and these refugees have fled Myanmar for many years and no longer know whether their hometown exists, their only way to survive is to work illegally in the local area, supplying more than 200 textile factories and food supplies there. For jobs such as processing plants, the salary is only one-third of the local minimum wage, which is about HK$16. Those without job skills can only live in the garbage mountain and make a living by collecting garbage every day. Due to the extremely meager income, many children in the family who can walk have to go out to collect garbage and have no chance to go to school. Local services carried out by Sunshine Action We provided food to 100 families living in garbage mountains. Among them, we provided nutritional milk powder and drinks to malnourished children, hoping that they can absorb nutrients more easily. At the same time, we donated headlamps, flashlights, batteries and water boots to facilitate their "treasure hunting" in the garbage dump at night. Soap and washing powder can help them maintain personal hygiene and reduce illness. MAO TAO CLINIC Founded by Dr. Cynthia Maung, herself a displaced person forced to flee her homeland in 1988, has worked tirelessly for over 20 years, providing critical healthcare to the people of Burma. The Clinic’s facilities and activities continue to grow. Currently, between 400 -500 people on average come to the clinic each day, and there is a staff of about 700 providing comprehensive health services and child protection services. Each Student will adopt a tree to take care and will bring 2-3 fruit trees to be planted at their homes. Thailand is the 5th country where we reached our global program 'Plant the Planet'.

ETHIOPIA Addis Ababa - ETHIOPIA Volunteer Tour Ethiopia is one of the World’s poorest countries. Out of a population of around 80 million (2008) people, 35 million people are living in abject poverty. In one of the world’s poorest countries, where about 44 percent of the population lives under the poverty line, more than 12 million people are chronically or at least periodically food insecure. Most of them live in rural areas with agriculture as their main occupation. With 80% of Ethiopians dependent on agriculture as their main livelihood, severe arid conditions due to persistent lack of rainfall coupled with civil disputes have worsened Ethiopian poverty. INDONESIA SUNSHINE ACTION CHARITY TRIP to SURABAYA, INDONESIA 2026 https://www.sunshine-action.org/indonesia-global Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city and a major economic hub, exhibits a striking duality of rapid development and entrenched urban poverty. While its official poverty rate remains below the national average, this figure obscures a significant population living in vulnerable, near-poverty conditions. The economy is characterized by a heavy reliance on the informal sector, where many residents work in low-wage, insecure jobs without social protections. Urban inequality is visibly manifested in the contrast between modern commercial districts and dense, underserved kampung settlements, where access to adequate housing, sanitation, and basic services remains a critical challenge. Underlying issues such as underemployment, rural-urban migration, and vulnerability to economic shocks perpetuate this cycle of deprivation. Kartini Emergency School 20 years ago, the twin sisters Rossy & Rian, started the Kartini Emergency School providing free education and food for the street children in the slum area of Jakarta Indonesia. The Twin sisters and others specialized teachers provide free education for 573 students in this open area. Today, beside the base in Jakarta, their system has expanded to 87 schools in the Urban areas of Indonesia and each of the school is covering approximately 100-200 students.

DIGITAL INEQUALITY Project Info During the summer of 2021, our interns have undertaken a research project on digital inequality in the UK. The research looks at the correlation between digital exclusion and poverty, including the impact this has on homeless people. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated the digital divide. During the lockdowns, we relied more and more on the digital world as a means of living and working. Many public services and charities had to close their physical premises and move some of their services online. Those lacking digital literacy have thus been further isolated from essential services. Although it has been reported that the majority of homeless people own a mobile phone, the closing of facilities such as libraries, museums and cafes during the pandemic made it extremely difficult to charge these devices. A lack of internet access poses a challenge in accessing vital information and services, including where to pick up food and finding temporary accommodation. Our interns carried out extensive research into the current situation in the UK and the effects that digital exclusion is having on the homeless population. They noted decreased opportunities to socialise, a lack of access to essential software, a negative toll on mental health and fewer employment opportunities. SunshineVerse is a new initiative of SunshineAction to benefit the disadvantaged community in Hong Kong. With an increasing number of disadvantaged individuals confined to their homes by a lack of mobility, SunshineVerse seeks to leverage virtual reality technology to address their physical, social, and emotional needs. we aim to achieve two major initiatives: VR travel and VR palliative care . VR Travel : Providing virtual travel experiences. Allowing them to explore and immerse themselves in different countries and landmarks. Presenting descriptions and information about each landmark in text and speech in 3 languages - English, Cantonese, and Spanish. Enabling participation in activities that would be limited due to mobility constraints. Promoting physical activity, sensory stimulation, and a sense of adventure. VR Palliative Care : Introducing VR scenes that cater to the specific religious beliefs and preferences of patients nearing the end of their lives. Creating immersive experiences that simulate a comforting and pleasurable environment for patients during their final stages. For example, a Christian scene may involve serene music and the sight of angels welcoming the patient to heaven, while a Buddhist scene may feature a peaceful temple with soft lighting and the presence of the Buddha. CAMBODIA Intro For fifteen years, Sunshine Action has spearheaded numerous food donation initiatives and health-related programs across Cambodia, particularly in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Many of these initiatives have been bolstered by the dedicated efforts of medical student volunteers from The University of Hong Kong HKU and The Chinese University of Hong Kong CUHK. Among these collaborative efforts is the Children’s Health, Education & Environment Rescue Association (CHEER), a registered non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 2012 by a group of HKU students, faculty, and alumni. Recognizing their social responsibility to uplift underprivileged children, CHEER is committed to enhancing the physical and mental well-being of marginalized youth, fostering partnerships with local NGOs, and raising public awareness about the plight of disadvantaged communities. Their multifaceted approach encompasses health screenings, educational support, water purification systems, environmental improvements, and the provision of essential supplies. Additionally, the 2024-2025 charity missions saw the involvement of DOE Doctor of Excellence, a dynamic collective of HKU and CUHK medical students, further amplifying the impact of these humanitarian endeavors. This is part of the Medical Programs and Health related missions: https://www.sunshine-action.org/medical-health-projects In Siem Reap, we partnered with 26 members of Doctors of Excellence, a mixture of HKU and CUHK medical students, to provide pro bono medical attention. There, we spent time with each unique group of children, working with their leadership to conduct vision, BMI, and overall wellness checks. Together, we played games, provided medical care, food, and school supplies. It was bittersweet to simultaneously experience Cambodia’s vibrant culture as well as the suffering economy that has displaced numerous families from their homes. Project Summary The project consists of three main parts, namely health checkups for the early detection of health issues, health education workshops for the promotion of health awareness and youth empowerment, as well as material donations of staple food items and education materials. In total, we served up to 13 different NGOs, schools and other institutions, with 1000+ children, teens and young adults benefitting. Early Detection of Health Issues The health check-up program provided essential medical assistance to underserved Cambodian communities with limited access to healthcare facilities. Health screenings —which included body mass index (BMI) evaluation, visual and auditory acuity tests, and other critical indicators—enabled the early identification of potential health risks. Timely intervention and proper management of these conditions helped mitigate their adverse effects on participants’ health. As such, the health check-up initiative served as a foundational step toward safeguarding the well-being of Cambodia’s local residents. Promotion of Health Awareness & Empowerment of the Younger Generation In addition to conducting health screenings, volunteers engaged with multiple local orphanages through interactive workshops on health education. The health education workshops include five topics specially designed to cater to the varied age groups of our service targets, namely nutrition, dental hygiene, sex education, digital safety, and first aid. They were conducted in the form of interactive workshops, with presentations of the topics by volunteers and educational games to reinforce their learning. The health education sessions aim to fill in the critical gaps in health knowledge. By fostering a deeper understanding of prevalent health conditions, the initiative educated participants on preventive measures against both infectious and non-communicable diseases while emphasizing the importance of sustained physical well-being. Through structured interventions, individuals gained heightened health awareness and essential knowledge on hygiene practices. This program represented a proactive effort to address healthcare disparities among marginalized populations, ultimately contributing to their long-term wellness. Provision of Professional Advice and Guidance A dedicated DOE medical mentor was present to provide expert consultations based on participants' health evaluations. Tailored recommendations included guidance on daily wellness routines, balanced nutrition, suitable physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle strategies—empowering local residents to make informed decisions for their long-term health. Donations Tailored to the specific requests and unique needs of each entity, the donation to the impoverished community and school in Siem Reap encompassed essential provisions—ranging from staple food items such as rice, infant milk formula and assorted groceries to medicines, infant diapers and hygiene products, as well as educational materials including books, stationery, and other vital resources. Additionally, a more substantial allocation of rice, along with "Sunshine Bags," has been designated for distribution to individual cases and children in particularly vulnerable circumstances. COVID-19 restricted travel and exacerbated health and poverty conditions, preventing our missions abroad while increasing the need for our service. Currently, due to decreased tourism, both Cambodia and Thailand suffer an economic shock to their food and hospitality sectors, leaving many families desperate and with no one to turn to. Conscious of this need, it was our mission to provide supplies and medical examinations for vulnerable communities. Besides, we visited CDO to repair the purifiers and we visited the village to repair the toilet and purifiers as well. For our health and education team, we conducted a health and moral education workshop in CIO, OPCO, a new partner you have recommended to us, and Sok Orphanage. The children were happy about the workshops and games we have prepared. We also conducted health checks in CIO, OPCO, and the village. Sunshine Fortune Bags This was the first official program of Sunshine Action in 2008 and remains our biggest project after more than a decade. We started with the simple concept that "Everyone Needs to Eat", called our donations Fortune Bags, and used the Festive Seasons as a motivation to donate. From 2024, the Sunshine Action weekly events are in reels at the Sunshine Action Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sunshineactionhk The History of the Sunshine Fortune Bags The Fortune Bag Program packs and distributes bags full of rice, pasta, dry foods, sauces, toiletries, and other necessities to low-income individuals supported by our partner beneficiaries. The Sunshine Fortune Bag Program is the biggest program in the organization, which focuses on poverty relief. The Sunshine Fortune Bags have been distributed in many countries & regions around the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Macau, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines in the last 17years. In 2023, Sunshine Action is struggling to financially sustain all programs, including the Fortune Bag Program. Your contribution would mean a lot to us. Donate now! The first charity organization Sunshine Action donated Fortune Bags to was the HK Women Workers Association and its sister organization, Cleaning Workers’ Association. At that time in early 2008, there was no minimum wage in Hong Kong. Most cleaning workers made an average of only HKD$3,500-4,500 per month (USD$450-580). Many struggled to pay rent and sustain their families but could not apply for social welfare support. When Sunny started the Sunshine Fortune Bags program in 2008, there were only a couple of volunteers each season to pack all bags. They borrowed the office from HK Women Workers Association to store the food. Volunteers came on Saturdays and Sundays for 3 consecutive weekends to pack the bags. Sunshine Action did not have its own office until 4 years later. This was the humble beginning of Sunshine Action, the world's smallest charity organization. The Fortune Bag Program has since expanded outside of Hong Kong. Sunshine Action began providing Fortune Bags in Macau in 2011. Fortune Bags have also been distributed in Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines. Occasionally, we also donate to local charity kitchens in bulk. The heaviest Sunshine Fortune Bags were packed during September 2020 for Mid-Autumn Festival and World Food Day, with each bag containing 9-10 items and averaging 9 kg (or roughly 20 lbs) each The most expensive Sunshine Fortune Bags were made in May 2019 for Mother's & Father's Day. Each bag included 9 items and was approximately worth HKD$300 (USD$40). A total of 3,000 bags were distributed (total market value of HKD$900,000 or USD$120,000) during this period, making it the single most expensive program ever done in the history of Sunshine Action! Student and School Involvement Sunshine Action works with schools to fundraise, package and distribute Fortune Bags. Schools can help support the Fortune Bag Program in several ways: Hosting an event – Fortune Bag events require a venue and space for short-term food storage. Most food purchased by Sunshine Action would arrive 2-4 days before the packing event and normally in pallets. The items do not need to be stored inside rooms, but preferably under a roof to avoid potential rain. Schools must provide space for assembly lines to pack Fortune Bags. The open space should be fit for at least 6 assembly lines, with 3 long tables for each line. Fundraising and collecting donation items – items must be collected for distribution prior to the packing event. The target for donations should be the target number of Fortune Bags x 3-4 items per bag. These items must be at least 6 months from expiry date and not be stored in glass containers. During the pandemic, protective masks and other anti-pandemic items are also welcome. Schools can also create fundraising events to support the purchase of items for donation. On average, the school and students involved collect 50% of the donated content and Sunshine Action covers the remaining 50%.
