SUNSHINE ACTION

This fiscal fragility is further exacerbated by a pronounced digital and educational divide, which perpetuates a cycle of intergenerational disadvantage. For the numerous orphanages, rehabilitation centers, and community-based organizations that Sunshine Action and the DOE team sought to support, the challenges are twofold: they must navigate the operational exigencies of rising overheads for electricity and water, while simultaneously striving to equip their charges with the tools necessary for socioeconomic mobility.

The donation of electronic devices, stationery, and books was thus not merely an act of charity, but a targeted intervention aimed at bridging the infrastructural chasm that separates these communities from the opportunities of the digital economy. Concurrently, the provision of essential foodstuff and daily sundries served as an immediate, tangible reprieve from the relentless pressures of the present cost-of-living crisis, allowing these institutions to reallocate their scant resources toward long-term developmental goals. In this sense, the mission functioned as a dual imperative: it addressed the urgent physiological needs of the present while investing in the intellectual capital required for a more resilient future.

Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city and a major economic hub, exhibits a striking duality of rapid development and entrenched urban poverty. While its official poverty rate remains below the national average, this figure obscures a significant population living in vulnerable, near-poverty conditions. The economy is characterized by a heavy reliance on the informal sector, where many residents work in low-wage, insecure jobs without social protections. Urban inequality is visibly manifested in the contrast between modern commercial districts and dense, underserved kampung settlements, where access to adequate housing, sanitation, and basic services remains a critical challenge. Underlying issues such as underemployment, rural-urban migration, and vulnerability to economic shocks perpetuate this cycle of deprivation.


🩺In collaboration with “DOE Doctor of Excellence” – a group of medical students from Hong Kong University and CUHK Chinese University of Hong Kong, which have conducted previous successful medical and charity trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia with Sunshine Action.  The team with conduct several medical & health program to several local charity organizations target to serve the poor.
