- Congenital Heart Disease | Sunshine Action
Project Info Sunshine Action raises money to give children with congenital heart defects (CHD) access to lifesaving surgery and medication. To date, 60 surgeries have been completed thanks to funding from Sunshine Action. Donors can personally visit the patients they donate to, both before and after the surgery. Recipients of surgeries are often those who could not afford surgery without help. In 2023, Sunshine Action is struggling to financially sustain all programs, including the CHD Program. Your contribution would mean a lot to us. Donate now! What is CHD? A congenital heart defect (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart and great vessels which is present at birth. The term CHD refers to many types of defects, most of which either obstruct blood flow in the heart or vessels near it, or cause blood to flow through the heart in an abnormal pattern. Other defects, such as long QT syndrome, affect the heart's rhythm. Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Approximately 9 people in 1000 are born with a congenital heart defect. Some complex congenital heart defects require medication or surgery. In China, as many as 8/1000 people are born with CHD, meaning that more than 10 million Chinese people are affected by these conditions. Patient Stories Mu Lar Kway was a 14-year-old girl when she came to Sunshine Action with a congenital cardiac disease known as Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). TOF accounts for about 10% of congenital heart diseases and is characterized by a ventricular septal defect, or a hole in the muscle wall that separates the two lower chambers of the heart. This hole allows oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood, and results in a decreased efficiency of the heart. The blood picks up less oxygen from the lungs, and oxygen-poor blood circulates through the body. Prior to her surgery, Mu Lar Kway lived in Burma with her brother, parents, and niece. She attended grade 5 at her local school. She enjoyed going to school but often had to miss class because of extreme fatigue. Due to her condition, the simplest tasks, including the 20 minute walk to school, exhausted her. Because her blood supply was deficient in oxygen, her skin, lips and fingernails had a blue tint. Her condition also stunted her growth, giving her the appearance of looking much younger. Her parents were paddy farmers earning around USD $200 a month. After education and food costs her family was unable to put away money for savings and could not afford the treatment that she needed for her condition. Fortunately, she received surgery thanks to funding from Sunshine Action. Kyaw Linn Naing was 15 years old when he was referred to Sunshine Action with a congenital heart disease known as Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). RHD is the most common acquired heart disease in children in many countries of the world, especially in developing countries such as Burma. Kyaw Linn Naing was first diagnosed at 11-years-old and experienced heart palpitations, difficulty breathing and cyanosis. He also could not walk for longer than 10 minutes at a time. Kyaw Linn Naing lives with his parents, siblings, and grandmother in Burma. His parents were vegetable growers and stated that Kway Linn Naing's medical treatment is very expensive in Burma and costs more than they could ever afford. Under the care of Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), an organization which helps Burmese refugees in Thailand, Kyaw Linn Naing received lifesaving surgery. He has since made a full recovery. His family is very grateful to BCMF and his doctors who helped him. When he is older, he would like to be a doctor to give others the gift of good health. Walkathon In past years Sunshine Action has organized the China Walkathon to DuLongJiang, a major walkathon which raises money for children with congenital heart disease in China. The Walkathon location is along the Dulong River, located in the northwest section of Yunnan Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. The Dulong River Valley is inhabited by the Dulong people, one of the smallest ethnic groups in China. Many children living in the Dulong River Valley and other sparsely populated areas cannot afford treatment for congenital heart disease, which is why the Walkathon is so important to raise money and awareness for those in need. Along with other international efforts, Sunshine Action has paused the Walkathons due to travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

SUNSHINEVERSE What is SunshineVerse? SunshineVerse is an innovative project aimed to benefit the wellbeing of the unfortunate and disadvantaged in Hong Kong. More specifically, the SunshineVerse is a virtual reality (VR) solution aimed to help overcome the issues faced by the disadvantaged. During the COVID-19 lockdown, problems such as loneliness and social isolation were highlighted, causing a rise in both physical and mental health problems (due to lack of social interaction and diagnosis). The SunshineVerse was designed and created in order to address these issues. Although the COVID pandemic is no longer considered a major threat, these problems still exist due to a variety of societal issues, including lack of financial support, and physical and health limitations. With the increasing percentage of disadvantaged (including elderly, poor people, those with disabilities etc.) individuals confined to their homes by a lack of mobility, SunshineVerse seeks to leverage technology to address their physical, social, and emotional needs. Although we imagine SunshineVerse to be a highly scalable model that can serve diverse needs with time, we aim to kickstart the program with two main initiatives: VR travel and VR Meditati on. VR Travel: Provide elderly individuals with virtual travel experiences, allowing them to explore and immerse themselves in different countries and landmarks. Provide descriptions and information about each landmark in text and speech form in 3 languages - English, Cantonese, and Spanish. Enable participation in activities that would be limited due to mobility constraints. Promote physical activity, sensory stimulation, and a sense of adventure. VR Meditation: Introduce virtual reality scenes that cater to the specific religious beliefs and preferences of patients nearing the end of their lives. Create immersive experiences that simulate a comforting and pleasurable environment for patients during their final stages. For example, a Christian scene may involve serene music and the sight of angels welcoming the patient to heaven, while a Buddhist scene may feature a peaceful temple with soft lighting and the presence of the Buddha. Justification for SunshineVerse Our research has identified three main problems amongst the elderly and the disadvantaged in Hong Kong - loneliness, cognitive decline, and lack of physical activity. In Hong Kong, the prevalence of physical inactivity was 13.5% among people aged 65-74 years, 22.4% among those aged 75-84 years, and 42.8% among those aged 85 years or above in 2019 (Centre for Health Protection Hong Kong Government, 2020). This not only has an impact on their physical health, but also their mental health. Research has shown that lower levels of physical activity can result in worse mental health outcomes. There is increased risk of depression and anxiety, and a decrease in overall wellbeing (Marconcin et al., 2022). Social life is not always emphasized while loneliness is a common issue among the elderly living in elderly homes. There are 34% of elderly persons living in elderly homes reported feeling lonely or isolated (Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, 2019). This can have a negative impact on their mental and physical health. In terms of physical health, social isolation can result in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. From the mental health perspective, loneliness is a risk for depression, cognitive decline, dementia, anxiety, and suicide (WHO, 2021). Dementia is a large problem in Hong Kong. According to the Mental Health Review Report in Hong Kong (2017), about 100,000 elderly persons were diagnosed with dementia. This accounts for about 10% of the elderly population. Not only will those with dementia slowly become more and more forgetful, but their personality may also change as well, becoming more erratic and apathetic. As their dementia progresses, they will no longer be able to live alone safely, and will need to rely on carers. Elderlies also have a natural decline in cognitive abilities, even when they are healthy. How will SunshineVerse help? The SunshineVerse addresses these problems by: Creating an immersive experience for users to increase their sense of adventure. Provide new cultural experiences and entertainment which keep users engaged and active. Strengthen social bonds between users and others through the sharing of new experiences. Reduce the sense of isolation and loneliness by experiencing virtual travel together with others. Encourage cognitive stimulation for elderly through learning new technological skills and information. Helps elderly recall older memories as well as create new memories, which in turn improves social interaction with others. Provides calming and pleasantly stimulating experiences to alleviate stress and anxiety and induce positive emotions. Allowing those without financial stability to experience travelling, reducing perceived deprivation and increasing positive mood. SunshineVerse aims to improve the quality of life of our beneficiaries by increasing motivation for physical activity, reduce anxiety and strengthen bonds between beneficiaries and those around them. It is likely that in a couple of years, there will be much more VR technology available for commercial use amongst the general population. With the SunshineVerse, we aim to be the first to help integrate VR technology into everyday life in order to serve the elderly and those in need. In the future, we hope to include more and more services, including VR communication, medical consultation and diagnosis, VR therapy etc., but these will have to come later in line with the advancement of VR technology. To our knowledge, there are currently no companies or organisations using VR and technology to improve the lives of the disadvantaged in Hong Kong. Most of the VR entertainment services in Hong Kong are directed towards the youth, and are costly. However, testing VR experiences (including VR travel and VR games) with our beneficiaries (3 elderlies aged 80-90 years) showed that they are highly interested in trying various VR experiences. The VR experience left the elderlies feeling happy and excited, and they all said they would use these services again. Primitive testing shows that the SunshineVerse is capable of bringing significant positive impacts into the lives of the disadvantaged. What next? SunshineVerse is our next big project. We will be focusing on the launch and development of this project over the next few years, with the aim of kickstarting the project development in 2024. Sunshine Action is currently discussing the development of SunshineVerse with various VR developers in Hong Kong. We are also actively applying and looking for funding for this innovative project. If you are interested in donating or want to help us with the development of this project, please contact Sunny at sunshine@sunshine-action.org .
- Cambodia (GLOBAL) | Sunshine Action
CAMBODIA Intro For fifteen years, Sunshine Action has spearheaded numerous food donation initiatives and health-related programs across Cambodia, particularly in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Many of these initiatives have been bolstered by the dedicated efforts of medical student volunteers from The University of Hong Kong HKU and The Chinese University of Hong Kong CUHK. Among these collaborative efforts is the Children’s Health, Education & Environment Rescue Association (CHEER), a registered non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 2012 by a group of HKU students, faculty, and alumni. Recognizing their social responsibility to uplift underprivileged children, CHEER is committed to enhancing the physical and mental well-being of marginalized youth, fostering partnerships with local NGOs, and raising public awareness about the plight of disadvantaged communities. Their multifaceted approach encompasses health screenings, educational support, water purification systems, environmental improvements, and the provision of essential supplies. Additionally, the 2024-2025 charity missions saw the involvement of DOE Doctor of Excellence, a dynamic collective of HKU and CUHK medical students, further amplifying the impact of these humanitarian endeavors. This is part of the Medical Programs and Health related missions: https://www.sunshine-action.org/medical-health-projects In Siem Reap, we partnered with 26 members of Doctors of Excellence, a mixture of HKU and CUHK medical students, to provide pro bono medical attention. There, we spent time with each unique group of children, working with their leadership to conduct vision, BMI, and overall wellness checks. Together, we played games, provided medical care, food, and school supplies. It was bittersweet to simultaneously experience Cambodia’s vibrant culture as well as the suffering economy that has displaced numerous families from their homes. Project Summary The project consists of three main parts, namely health checkups for the early detection of health issues, health education workshops for the promotion of health awareness and youth empowerment, as well as material donations of staple food items and education materials. In total, we served up to 13 different NGOs, schools and other institutions, with 1000+ children, teens and young adults benefitting. Early Detection of Health Issues The health check-up program provided essential medical assistance to underserved Cambodian communities with limited access to healthcare facilities. Health screenings —which included body mass index (BMI) evaluation, visual and auditory acuity tests, and other critical indicators—enabled the early identification of potential health risks. Timely intervention and proper management of these conditions helped mitigate their adverse effects on participants’ health. As such, the health check-up initiative served as a foundational step toward safeguarding the well-being of Cambodia’s local residents. Promotion of Health Awareness & Empowerment of the Younger Generation In addition to conducting health screenings, volunteers engaged with multiple local orphanages through interactive workshops on health education. The health education workshops include five topics specially designed to cater to the varied age groups of our service targets, namely nutrition, dental hygiene, sex education, digital safety, and first aid. They were conducted in the form of interactive workshops, with presentations of the topics by volunteers and educational games to reinforce their learning. The health education sessions aim to fill in the critical gaps in health knowledge. By fostering a deeper understanding of prevalent health conditions, the initiative educated participants on preventive measures against both infectious and non-communicable diseases while emphasizing the importance of sustained physical well-being. Through structured interventions, individuals gained heightened health awareness and essential knowledge on hygiene practices. This program represented a proactive effort to address healthcare disparities among marginalized populations, ultimately contributing to their long-term wellness. Provision of Professional Advice and Guidance A dedicated DOE medical mentor was present to provide expert consultations based on participants' health evaluations. Tailored recommendations included guidance on daily wellness routines, balanced nutrition, suitable physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle strategies—empowering local residents to make informed decisions for their long-term health. Donations Tailored to the specific requests and unique needs of each entity, the donation to the impoverished community and school in Siem Reap encompassed essential provisions—ranging from staple food items such as rice, infant milk formula and assorted groceries to medicines, infant diapers and hygiene products, as well as educational materials including books, stationery, and other vital resources. Additionally, a more substantial allocation of rice, along with "Sunshine Bags," has been designated for distribution to individual cases and children in particularly vulnerable circumstances. As part of a broader initiative integrating food and material donations with health-focused outreach, the charity journey supported the following organizations and schools: A.H.C.O. Angkor Help the Children Org., Cambodia ABC & Rice, Cambodia C.D.H.O. Cambodia Development of Home Organization, Cambodia C.D.O. Cambodia Development of Hope Org., Cambodia C.I.O. Cambodia Improvement Org., Cambodia Cheasim Norma Angkor Primary School, Cambodia Grace House Cambodia, Siem Reap KGM Community House / Bakong High School, Cambodia Kong Much Primary School, Cambodia Love to Progress People (LTPP), Cambodia Missionaries of Charity, Siem Reap New Hope Cambodia, Siem Reap After our service trip to Cambodia and Thailand, Sunshine Action is proud to have reignited its charitable partnerships overseas. COVID-19 restricted travel and exacerbated health and poverty conditions, preventing our missions abroad while increasing the need for our service. Currently, due to decreased tourism, both Cambodia and Thailand suffer an economic shock to their food and hospitality sectors, leaving many families desperate and with no one to turn to. Conscious of this need, it was our mission to provide supplies and medical examinations for vulnerable communities. Mission of the Trip 旅程目的: Food distribution for the poorest of the poor. 購買、包裝食物包,並運送至貧民 Visiting and volunteering in several local organizations Provide SSS Sunshine Student Sponsorship to street & and poor children ***program subjected to change in actual environment, final fundraised amount & weather Though a touristic nightlife prevails, the day is marked by parents unable to take care of their children and increased rates of malnutrition stunting Cambodia’s future. While visiting the CIO (Children’s Improvement Organization), we learned that we were the first organization to come and donate in five years, a harsh reality reflecting COVID-19’s enduring impact on underfunded charities. We hope to return again soon to Cambodia, and we hope you join us next time, whether that be by volunteering your talents or donating your funds. As always, thank you for your support! - UK Building Project | Sunshine Action
UK BUILDING PROJECT Project Info During the summer of 2021, our interns have been planning a building project for Sunshine Action. They have researched and come up with designs for a portable shelter for the homeless. This project aims to provide a mobile shelter for those who experience homelessness. It will contain basic necessities such as blankets, food and water. During the COVID-19 pandemic, street sleepers are more likely to be at risk as they have little means of protection from the virus. Building mobile shelters would alleviate some transmission amongst the homeless population. Moreover, these shelters would protect the privacy and dignity of rough sleepers, who are faced with strong stigmas and are often associated with substance abuse. Occupying public areas may make them feel uncomfortable, leading to poor mental health. Providing shelters can offer them a safe space. The main function of these shelters would be as an emergency measure for those who cannot afford or are struggling to find a home for a short period of time. We hope to incorporate regular charity or fundraising events to raise awareness of this issue and dispel some of the stigma surrounding homelessness. Research and Design Our interns have carried out extensive research into existing designs for similar mobile shelters. You can see the full design process in the PDF at the bottom. We have also researched planning requirements in the UK and hope to put this project into action over the next few months. We are looking for charities that may be interested in partnering with us to construct these shelters or to run them once they have been built. If you are a homelessness charity and you are interested in getting involved with this project, please contact sunshine@sunshine-action.org . We look forward to hearing from you! - Public Health Project | Sunshine Action
PUBLIC HEALTH PROJECT Project Info Over the summer of 2021, some of our UK interns have been working on a public health project targeted towards the homeless community. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed significant gaps in health provisions for homeless people in the UK. Whilst the homeless population have always been at increased risk of illness, the risks associated with catching COVID-19 have made this an imperative public health issue. There are many barriers to homeless people seeking the medical care they need. Having to provide a permanent address when registering with a GP, inflexible appointment booking systems, discrimination from staff and gaps in suitable support all make it more difficult for a homeless individual to have reliable access to healthcare. Moreover, the lack of stable housing often means that health needs are not prioritised and medical issues go untreated. Health problems amongst the homeless population present a significant burden to the NHS. Hospital and A&E admissions of homeless people is four times higher than the rate within the general public, which is estimated to cost a minimum of £85m per year. The pandemic has flagged up some of these issues; the impact of COVID-19 is likely to be worse for someone who already has inadequate access to healthcare. The government has prioritised vaccination of the homeless community in order to stop the spread of COVID on the streets, but more needs to be done in order to encourage higher uptake. Moreover, studies have shown a hike in mental health problems amongst the homeless population since the start of the pandemic. Increased isolation and boredom have led to a rise in conditions such as depression and anxiety amongst the homeless and those living in temporary accommodation. Consequently, our interns have created a health pamphlet to be distributed to rough sleepers around the UK. It contains information on how to register with a GP, details of organisations offering physical and mental health support, how to access dental and eye care, as well as information about COVID-19 symptoms and testing. It also suggests ways to stay mentally and physically healthy on a daily basis. Please take a look at the booklet below: EMBED PDF HERE IF POSSIBLE
