SUNSHINEVERSE What is SunshineVerse? SunshineVerse is an innovative project aimed to benefit the wellbeing of the unfortunate and disadvantaged in Hong Kong. More specifically, the SunshineVerse is a virtual reality (VR) solution aimed to help overcome the issues faced by the disadvantaged. During the COVID-19 lockdown, problems such as loneliness and social isolation were highlighted, causing a rise in both physical and mental health problems (due to lack of social interaction and diagnosis). The SunshineVerse was designed and created in order to address these issues. Although the COVID pandemic is no longer considered a major threat, these problems still exist due to a variety of societal issues, including lack of financial support, and physical and health limitations. With the increasing percentage of disadvantaged (including elderly, poor people, those with disabilities etc.) individuals confined to their homes by a lack of mobility, SunshineVerse seeks to leverage technology to address their physical, social, and emotional needs. Although we imagine SunshineVerse to be a highly scalable model that can serve diverse needs with time, we aim to kickstart the program with two main initiatives: VR travel and VR Meditati on. VR Travel: Provide elderly individuals with virtual travel experiences, allowing them to explore and immerse themselves in different countries and landmarks. Provide descriptions and information about each landmark in text and speech form in 3 languages - English, Cantonese, and Spanish. Enable participation in activities that would be limited due to mobility constraints. Promote physical activity, sensory stimulation, and a sense of adventure. VR Meditation: Introduce virtual reality scenes that cater to the specific religious beliefs and preferences of patients nearing the end of their lives. Create immersive experiences that simulate a comforting and pleasurable environment for patients during their final stages. For example, a Christian scene may involve serene music and the sight of angels welcoming the patient to heaven, while a Buddhist scene may feature a peaceful temple with soft lighting and the presence of the Buddha. Justification for SunshineVerse Our research has identified three main problems amongst the elderly and the disadvantaged in Hong Kong - loneliness, cognitive decline, and lack of physical activity. In Hong Kong, the prevalence of physical inactivity was 13.5% among people aged 65-74 years, 22.4% among those aged 75-84 years, and 42.8% among those aged 85 years or above in 2019 (Centre for Health Protection Hong Kong Government, 2020). This not only has an impact on their physical health, but also their mental health. Research has shown that lower levels of physical activity can result in worse mental health outcomes. There is increased risk of depression and anxiety, and a decrease in overall wellbeing (Marconcin et al., 2022). Social life is not always emphasized while loneliness is a common issue among the elderly living in elderly homes. There are 34% of elderly persons living in elderly homes reported feeling lonely or isolated (Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, 2019). This can have a negative impact on their mental and physical health. In terms of physical health, social isolation can result in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. From the mental health perspective, loneliness is a risk for depression, cognitive decline, dementia, anxiety, and suicide (WHO, 2021). Dementia is a large problem in Hong Kong. According to the Mental Health Review Report in Hong Kong (2017), about 100,000 elderly persons were diagnosed with dementia. This accounts for about 10% of the elderly population. Not only will those with dementia slowly become more and more forgetful, but their personality may also change as well, becoming more erratic and apathetic. As their dementia progresses, they will no longer be able to live alone safely, and will need to rely on carers. Elderlies also have a natural decline in cognitive abilities, even when they are healthy. How will SunshineVerse help? The SunshineVerse addresses these problems by: Creating an immersive experience for users to increase their sense of adventure. Provide new cultural experiences and entertainment which keep users engaged and active. Strengthen social bonds between users and others through the sharing of new experiences. Reduce the sense of isolation and loneliness by experiencing virtual travel together with others. Encourage cognitive stimulation for elderly through learning new technological skills and information. Helps elderly recall older memories as well as create new memories, which in turn improves social interaction with others. Provides calming and pleasantly stimulating experiences to alleviate stress and anxiety and induce positive emotions. Allowing those without financial stability to experience travelling, reducing perceived deprivation and increasing positive mood. SunshineVerse aims to improve the quality of life of our beneficiaries by increasing motivation for physical activity, reduce anxiety and strengthen bonds between beneficiaries and those around them. It is likely that in a couple of years, there will be much more VR technology available for commercial use amongst the general population. With the SunshineVerse, we aim to be the first to help integrate VR technology into everyday life in order to serve the elderly and those in need. In the future, we hope to include more and more services, including VR communication, medical consultation and diagnosis, VR therapy etc., but these will have to come later in line with the advancement of VR technology. To our knowledge, there are currently no companies or organisations using VR and technology to improve the lives of the disadvantaged in Hong Kong. Most of the VR entertainment services in Hong Kong are directed towards the youth, and are costly. However, testing VR experiences (including VR travel and VR games) with our beneficiaries (3 elderlies aged 80-90 years) showed that they are highly interested in trying various VR experiences. The VR experience left the elderlies feeling happy and excited, and they all said they would use these services again. Primitive testing shows that the SunshineVerse is capable of bringing significant positive impacts into the lives of the disadvantaged. What next? SunshineVerse is our next big project. We will be focusing on the launch and development of this project over the next few years, with the aim of kickstarting the project development in 2024. Sunshine Action is currently discussing the development of SunshineVerse with various VR developers in Hong Kong. We are also actively applying and looking for funding for this innovative project. MYANMAR Intro Four Sunshine Action volunteers went to Yangon & Mae Sot, distributing over 30 tones of food & material through the following several organizations including the Burmese Migrant Worker's Education Committee, Eyes to Burma for the dump site, Boddha Ditta Nun Vihara, Mangalar Parahita Youth Development Center, Tikha Rama nun Vihara,Happy Heaven Humanitarian Project for HIV/AIDS orphans, Mayan Chaung Leprosy village and the Social Action for Women. In this trip, we also sponsored tuition fee for teachers, solar light, shoes, and many more, estimated to benefit over 2'316 people directly Our focus is to ensure that as many children and young people as possible have access to a quality education which enriches their lives now, and opens opportunities for them either back in Myanmar, in Thailand or further afield. At the moment we oversee education for approximately 3'500 children in 25 learning centres. Living on Landfill Eyes to Burma is truly fortunate that Australian filmmaker, Helen Newman of Nomad Films, visited the Mae Sot garbage dump and was so moved by what she saw that she made a short documentary. She recently sent a link to the film, and said: "Finally I am able to share the film created from my time on a Thai rubbish dump with Burmese refugees and the wonderful Fred Stockwell from Eyes to Burma. I met so many inspiring, powerful and positive people during this shoot and was reminded again both of the incredible strength of the human spirit and how much difference one person can make." We met Fred Stockwell, a wonderful man of 70 years old alone taking care of hundreds of people in the dump site of Mae Sot, Thailand. A garbage dump outside of Mae Sot, Thailand, is home to a group of Burmese people who have been displaced by armed conflicts in Burma. They are unable to return to their country where many of their villages have been destroyed and are unable to gain legal refugee status in Thailand; thus, their options are very limited. Those living in the Mae Sot Dump, even the children, earn a meager living by picking recyclable plastic from piles of garbage.

Sunshine Fortune Bags This was the first official program of Sunshine Action in 2008 and remains our biggest project after more than a decade. We started with the simple concept that "Everyone Needs to Eat", called our donations Fortune Bags, and used the Festive Seasons as a motivation to donate. From 2024, the Sunshine Action weekly events are in reels at the Sunshine Action Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sunshineactionhk The History of the Sunshine Fortune Bags The Fortune Bag Program packs and distributes bags full of rice, pasta, dry foods, sauces, toiletries, and other necessities to low-income individuals supported by our partner beneficiaries. The Sunshine Fortune Bag Program is the biggest program in the organization, which focuses on poverty relief. The Sunshine Fortune Bags have been distributed in many countries & regions around the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Macau, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines in the last 17years. In 2023, Sunshine Action is struggling to financially sustain all programs, including the Fortune Bag Program. Your contribution would mean a lot to us. Donate now! The first charity organization Sunshine Action donated Fortune Bags to was the HK Women Workers Association and its sister organization, Cleaning Workers’ Association. At that time in early 2008, there was no minimum wage in Hong Kong. Most cleaning workers made an average of only HKD$3,500-4,500 per month (USD$450-580). Many struggled to pay rent and sustain their families but could not apply for social welfare support. When Sunny started the Sunshine Fortune Bags program in 2008, there were only a couple of volunteers each season to pack all bags. They borrowed the office from HK Women Workers Association to store the food. Volunteers came on Saturdays and Sundays for 3 consecutive weekends to pack the bags. Sunshine Action did not have its own office until 4 years later. This was the humble beginning of Sunshine Action, the world's smallest charity organization. The Fortune Bag Program has since expanded outside of Hong Kong. Sunshine Action began providing Fortune Bags in Macau in 2011. Fortune Bags have also been distributed in Vietnam, Kenya, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Mongolia, India, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam & the Philippines. Occasionally, we also donate to local charity kitchens in bulk. The heaviest Sunshine Fortune Bags were packed during September 2020 for Mid-Autumn Festival and World Food Day, with each bag containing 9-10 items and averaging 9 kg (or roughly 20 lbs) each The most expensive Sunshine Fortune Bags were made in May 2019 for Mother's & Father's Day. Each bag included 9 items and was approximately worth HKD$300 (USD$40). A total of 3,000 bags were distributed (total market value of HKD$900,000 or USD$120,000) during this period, making it the single most expensive program ever done in the history of Sunshine Action! Schools can help support the Fortune Bag Program in several ways: Hosting an event – Fortune Bag events require a venue and space for short-term food storage. Most food purchased by Sunshine Action would arrive 2-4 days before the packing event and normally in pallets. The items do not need to be stored inside rooms, but preferably under a roof to avoid potential rain. Schools must provide space for assembly lines to pack Fortune Bags. The open space should be fit for at least 6 assembly lines, with 3 long tables for each line. Fundraising and collecting donation items – items must be collected for distribution prior to the packing event. The target for donations should be the target number of Fortune Bags x 3-4 items per bag. These items must be at least 6 months from expiry date and not be stored in glass containers. During the pandemic, protective masks and other anti-pandemic items are also welcome. Schools can also create fundraising events to support the purchase of items for donation. On average, the school and students involved collect 50% of the donated content and Sunshine Action covers the remaining 50%. BUILDING PROJECT Sunshine Folding Container Houses Our Sunshine Folding Container Houses consist of brand-new mobile containers. They are a green and economical solution to the housing crisis. Each container is made from new steel sheets and includes water-proof and fire-proof insulation. They have a minimum lifespan of 13-15 years or more, depending on local weather conditions and maintenance. These homes are designed to provide a quick housing solution in natural disaster zones, or to provide extra accommodation to orphanages or care homes. The price of each home is lower than the cost of purchasing and renovating a second-hand container. They also avoid the possible risk to health that may come with a second-hand container that has been used to store dangerous chemicals. These houses are modular, meaning a row of one or even two storeys would fit together well. Stairs can be installed at one end of the row to provide access to the second storey.

BANGLADESH Intro Seven Sunshine Action volunteers visited Dhaka, Bangladesh and served 3 local organizations, including the Missionaries of Charity Shishu Bhavan, Smyrna development Society and Missionaries of Charity House of Compassion. The mission of the trip was to distribute food and material to the poorest of the poor, the severely sick, the handicapped and orphans.

PUBLIC HEALTH PROJECT Project Info Over the summer of 2021, some of our UK interns have been working on a public health project targeted towards the homeless community. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed significant gaps in health provisions for homeless people in the UK. Whilst the homeless population have always been at increased risk of illness, the risks associated with catching COVID-19 have made this an imperative public health issue. There are many barriers to homeless people seeking the medical care they need. Having to provide a permanent address when registering with a GP, inflexible appointment booking systems, discrimination from staff and gaps in suitable support all make it more difficult for a homeless individual to have reliable access to healthcare. Moreover, the lack of stable housing often means that health needs are not prioritised and medical issues go untreated. Health problems amongst the homeless population present a significant burden to the NHS. Hospital and A&E admissions of homeless people is four times higher than the rate within the general public, which is estimated to cost a minimum of £85m per year. The pandemic has flagged up some of these issues; the impact of COVID-19 is likely to be worse for someone who already has inadequate access to healthcare. The government has prioritised vaccination of the homeless community in order to stop the spread of COVID on the streets, but more needs to be done in order to encourage higher uptake. Moreover, studies have shown a hike in mental health problems amongst the homeless population since the start of the pandemic. Increased isolation and boredom have led to a rise in conditions such as depression and anxiety amongst the homeless and those living in temporary accommodation. Consequently, our interns have created a health pamphlet to be distributed to rough sleepers around the UK. It contains information on how to register with a GP, details of organisations offering physical and mental health support, how to access dental and eye care, as well as information about COVID-19 symptoms and testing.
